His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

    Prabhupada — Founder-Acharya of ISKCON

"Recently when all of the GBC members were with His Divine Grace in Vrindavana, Srila Prabhupada indicated that soon He would appoint some of His senior disciples to act as "rittik"-representative of the acarya, for the purpose of performing initiations, both first initiation and second initiation. His Divine Grace has so far given a list of eleven disciples who will act in that capacity:

    • His Holiness Kirtanananda Swami

    • His Holiness Satsvarupa dasa Gosvami

    • His Holiness Jayapataka Swami

    • His Holiness Tamala Krishna Gosvami

    • His Holiness Hrdayananda Gosvami

    • His Holiness Bhavananda Gosvami

    • His Holiness Hamsaduta Swami

    • His Holiness Ramesvara Swami

    • His Holiness Harikesa Swami

    • His Grace Bhagavan dasa Adhikari

    • His Grace Jayatirtha das Adhikari"

    — Final Order Letter, July 9 1977. Approved by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

"One should take initiation from a bona fide spiritual master coming in the disciplice succession, who is authorised by his predecessor spiritual master. This is called diksa-vidhana."

    — Srila Prabhupada, Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.8.54, Purport

    GBC Resolution No. 16 — March 19 1978, 9.30am:

"The GBC will consider each year at Gour Poornima the appointment of new Spiritual

Masters to be approved by a 3/4 vote. However for 1978, no new Spiritual Masters

shall be appointed other than the 11 selected by Srila Prabhupada."

    GBC Resolution No. 1 — March 21 1978, 9:30am:

"A GBC committee will be formed consisting of GBC members who are initiating

Gurus. They will choose new gurus once per year in Mayapur. This is an amendment to

    Resolution 16 of March 19, 1978 9:30 am."

From 1966 to 1977, the GBC had one defined role. Administration. Not succession. Not guru creation. Not acarya appointment. The founding documents are clear on this. The Direction of Management July 28 1970, the Constitution of Association 1966, Srila Prabhupad's Last Will and Testament, June 6 1977, the Final Order Letter, July 9 1977. Approved by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami — not one of them gives the GBC authority over the appointment of spiritual masters.

Then, in three days of meetings in March 1978, everything changed.

Resolution 16 introduced something that had never existed in Gaudiya Vaishnava history — a vote to determine who becomes guru. Not a scriptural qualification. Not a realisation recognised by saintly persons. Not an order from one's own spiritual master. A 3/4 vote.

Two days later, Resolution 1 went further. A standing committee — consisting only of those GBC members who were already initiating — would henceforth choose new gurus once per year in Mayapur. Did the "Managers" now become the gatekeepers of the paramparā.

The question the record places before us is simple. Where did this authority come from? The founding documents do not give it. Srila Prabhupad's Last Will and Testament (June 6 1977) does not give it. The Final Order Letter (July 9 1977) does not give it. The Direction of Management (July 28 1970) does not give it.

    ✦ Did You Know? ✦

Srila Prabhupada's Room Conversation May 28 1977 contains the line: 'When I order, "You become guru," he becomes regular guru. That's all. He becomes disciple of my disciple. That's it.'

    ✦ Did You Know? ✦

The question of the eleven officiating disciples becoming diksha gurus was addressed at the very first GBC meeting following Srila Prabhuada's departure.

    6,000 LETTERS

Śrīla Prabhupāda discussed and, in many letters, referred to future dīkṣā-gurus. The GBC has access to approximately 6,000 letters. Yet they have not produced a single letter containing an express order or decision appointing future dīkṣā-gurus. This point was acknowledged in the introductory address of the outgoing GBC Chairman in 2025.

    ✦ WORDS & PHRASES ✦

This work is sequential, not selective. It does not examine every GBC resolution. Rather, it examines every resolution, statement, or policy that conflicts with, departs from, or contravenes Śrīla Prabhupāda's founding documents and direct instructions.
